    There are so many great ways to use direct mail to increase the inflow of new business for your company, but it all starts with what you are trying to promote.  Are you hosting an event you want people to show up to?  Do you have a big sale going on that you want to push?  Perhaps you've developed a new product line or service and want people to know - all great reasons.  But it's important you have a clear idea of what you are advertising for before you advertise.

    There are many factors to consider when given the task of creating effective, custom printed flyers for your company or organization, from cost, paper weight, printing finish, printing method, and color, and the message you're conveying, just to name a few.

    In today's share, we'll talk about some simple tips to help make your process for creating great, inexpensive flyers that are effective for your business in accomplishing its goals.

    Begin With Design

    It's important to make sure before you start thinking about going to press to have a solid direction in what design you will be using for your flyer.  Promotional business flyers have many different functions and possibilities beyond simply communication a single message to a large audience.  The different aspects of design that might be contained within your flyer will significantly influence other decisions you will have to make about paper weight, finish, & printing method.  Of course, when designing your promotional flyer, you'll need to have a solid idea of what message you'll be using to market your campaign.  Let's talk about a couple tips you can use to more effectively use flyers as a way to market your business.

    Plan Your Marketing Campaign

    For many small and medium size business owners, it's easy to get lost in the details of what a marketing campaign is supposed to accomplish - other than the obvious of bringing in more business.

    Set Your Goal - Yes, we want to bring in more business, but what kind of business do we want to bring in?  What products or services do you really want to sell more of in the upcoming months?  Although you may need to adjust your expectations later, setting a goal for how much of this good or service you want to sell is a great place to start.  At the end of your campaign, you'll be able to measure if you met your goal, and if not what factors that need to be changed to do so the next time around.

    Create A Call To Action - This is the heart of your campaign, and what will drive potential new customers to take action on the message they receive when reading your promotional flyer.  Calls to action are meant to be interactive, so make sure that the direction you choose gets your read involved!  Here are a couple ideas:

    - Tear-Out-Coupons:  Give your potential new customer a reason to either hang on to that flyer, or provide them with an offer so good, they can't help but tear it off the page for later use.

    - Registration Forms:  Make the flyer interactive by requiring your potential customer to fill it out and bring back to your company's location.  Including a great reward for doing so is often very effective.

    -  Practical Use: Give your potential customers a reason to hang on to your flyer, giving it a longer shelf life, and thus more impressions or lifetime views.  Give your flyer some practical utility in which you potential customers might find value.  A calendar of monthly events sent out at the beginning of the month is a great example. Not only does this display information about your company that you want your potential customer to take advantage of, but it also provides them with a useful calendar of the month.

    What paper weight should I use?

    If the interactivity on your flyer requires tearing for coupons, make sure you choose a light enough paper weight to accommodate tearing.  However, if you don’t want your promotional flyer to be torn, printing on water and tear-resistant paper would significantly help increase the shelf life of your fliers.

    What paper finish should I use?

    If you intend to have your potential new customers or any of your staff required to write on the flyers, make sure you avoid using any paper finishes that would prevent any pens from easily writing on the flyer to prevent potential customers from becoming frustrate

    How many copies should I get?

    Make sure you check with your printer for quantity discounts both above and below the quantity you have in mind.  Although this goes for any type of custom printing you plan on doing for your business, it's a great best practice to make sure you're getting the most cost effective option for both your budget and your marketing goals.

    How Do I Give Them All Away?!
